Cheapest Sony RDR-VX560 1080p Tunerless DVD Recorder/VHS Combo Player

This machine has worked great for me but I have not used it tons and tons. I got this machine because my VCR was broken and I wanted to watch a movie I only had on VHS. It made no sense to get my old cheapy VCR fixed, so that's when I thought it would be good to invest in something that would allow me to play VHS tapes, but more importantly, convert them to DVD.

When I brought the machine home, it was relatively simple to insert a blank DVD, insert the VHS movie, and click the dub button to start playing the movie. I was able to watch the movie while it was copying it to DVD (I made sure not to pause or interrupt the VHS because that would interrupt the recording process). This worked great. When I have time, I'm going to convert all of my other VHS tapes.

Another thing I did successfully was record a movie at its show time directly to DVD. Worked great. Once again, I watched the movie while it was recording.

I have a cable box, which has a couple of outputs. I needed to go to Radio Shack to buy an audio splitter so that the audio could go directly from the cable box to the TV, as well as directly from the cable box to the RDR-VX560. This was unique to my setup, so I'm not saying you will need to do the same thing but just keep in mind you might need some cables and connectors to set things up optimally for ease of use.

There are features, after your record to DVD directly from either VHS or the airwaves/cable, where you can add chapters and titles. I added some basic info without reading the manual. Worked great.

Oh, if you are like me, and have never had a unit like this before, then it might help to know it works in a manner where it burns the DVD while you are playing something to record (i.e., from VHS, airwaves, cable). When whatever is playing is done, you can pause recording. When clicking to eject the DVD, the DVD will be "finalized" (close the recording session). You can also finalize manually via a menu option. I believe you can leave the unfinalized DVD in the recorder, and just keep recording from various sources as you desire, only to finalize when you're ready. Since I've only used it to record whole movies, I have always gotten to the end of the movie, and used the manual menu option to finalize. I have not tried leaving a DVD in the unit to record as needed on a heavy basis. I used it in a small test, and it seems to work well. Pretty cool actually.

I did not see any freezing like the others mentioned. You might call Sony support and ask them about any concerns you have in that regard and whether or not they fixed anything in newer models (maybe I have a newer one, but I bought it about 2 or 3 months ago). I'm not sure if Sony ever sends out firmware updates (i.e., on a special DVD), but you might ask them. Maybe there's a update to fix some software problems which might relate to problems others have reported. This is a complete guess on my part, but I would definitely look into it if I were serious about buying and concerned about the other reviews. I bought it because I saw that it was being sold at places which I don't think would sell a really bad product, so I bought it on faith after reading the basic specs.Buy Sony RDR VX560 Lowest Price, Order Now! Discount Sony BDP-CX960 400 Disc Blu-ray Disc / DVD MegaChanger (Black)

This unit is excellent. The Bluray experience is every bit as good as any other BD player I've used and the machine handles all of my CDs,DVDs,BDs without a problem. Some of my older DVDs have had freezing problems on other Bluray players but this one plays them all without a hitch.

The real genius of this unit is the ability to have all your movies at the ready and searchable... almost (albeit not quite as gracefully) like an ipod. This is awesome because it allows us to find DVDs we almost forgot we had. It also keeps all the disks out of the hands of my small kids who can't tell the difference between a Bluray Disk and a frisbee.

I felt that Gracenote worked wonderfully. Of the 378 disks I loaded, it only failed to identify 16. Most of those were not major releases (for example, the instruction manual/DVD for my Ryobi weedwacker). I was truly amazed by some of the titles it did recognize. It does take a little while to initially load all the disks and download the information but I honestly believe it was a small price to pay.

Our family has loved this unit. We got it bundled through Amazon with a 46" Sony Z series TV which made this Bluray player essentially free. If you are reading this review in December 2009, you should search Amazon for this deal if you are also considering a new TV. $1478 for a 46" LCD TV and this player is unbeatable. I asked for the supersaver shipping and got it in 3 days. The TV came the next day. The combination is awesome and I was very impressed with Amazon for this order.

Lastly, a note about some missing features of this unit. You can't access Amazon or Netflix, or any of that stuff that's becoming standard on the higher end Bluray players. That may seem like a deal breaker, but the fact is that the Z series TV we have this player connected to can do that. So can our Tivo. Honestly, do you really need ALL your equipment to have this feature. We're quite content without it in our Bluray player.

I recommend this, primarily if you have a lot of disks and you enjoy flipping through your titles before deciding what you're going to watch.Buy Sony BDP CX960 Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]

Philips DCP951/37 9-Inch Portable DVD Player With IPod Docking

We picked up this machine so that we could watch DVDs and movies downloaded from itunes while backpacking and we have been thrilled with it!

We love that we can watch DVDs and listen to CDs as well as play media from our ipod (it even works as a digital photo frame!). The SD card reader also allows us to play some .avi movies which has been an unexpected bonus since it's not altogether clear which file types are supported.

Having read reviews, the volume level exceeded our expectations and, when the ambient noise has been too loud, having 2 headphone jacks has quickly solved the problem.

Also, some reviews have reported that it feels "cheaply made" or "flimsy" but we find it to be sturdy given the price point.

The only downsides we've found are:
1) The exposed screen - some might find this to be a problem though it does come with a sleeve which serves to protect it. We did buy an additional DVD player bag for extra protection and to carry the player and accessories and that has worked out well.
2) The battery life isn't great.
3) It does come with a remote (which cleverly hides away) but the remote doesn't control the volume or power.

All in all, the ups outweighs the downs...we thought that it was a great find for $100...we'd recommend it!Buy Philips DCP951 Portable DVD Player Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]

Cheap Toshiba DVR670 DVD/VHS Recorder With Built In Tuner, Black

I was in the market for a DVD recorder VCR combo with a tuner and decided on this Toshiba recorder because it had all the features that I wanted. The reviews were also good. Besides transferring my tapes to DVDs I needed a recorder with a tuner so that I could record daily programs from different stations which you cannot do with a cable box. When I received the recorder I learned that there were quite a few stations that were encrypted. I called Toshiba and spent several hours on the phone with the technician. If I understood correctly this recorder only has a QAM NTSC tuner but not a QAM ATSC tuner. I was told that there was a misprint in Toshiba's product features. This recorder is NOT for you if you expect to receive all the digital stations without the cable box. I hope that Toshiba will correct this misprint or better yet install a QAM ATSC tuner on their recorders. Toshiba could also improve their customer service.Buy Toshiba DVR670 Lowest Price, Order Now! Panasonic DMR-EZ48VK 1080p Upconverting VHS DVD Recorder With Built In Tuner

Don't let the title mislead you. The unit itself does a wonderful job and works very well. But there are a few small issues that I want to point out.

1 - The remote lacks an eject button. I mean come on, who ever heard of a VCR or DVD player that lacked an eject button? While I admit that you have to go to the unit to insert/remove media anyway, I just find it odd that there wouldn't be an eject button.
2- Most remotes for dvd players have a "menu" button. For the DMR-EZ48VK you have to use the sub-menu then navigate to 'menu'. Again, a fairly standard feature for most players but Panasonic makes it more complicated then it needs to be
3 - Even with the fast start option on, I found that the unit still takes a noticeable amount of time to turn on.

But if you look past little things like these, the unit truly does work as advertised and is a great combo unit.Buy Panasonic DMR EZ48VK Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]

Envizen Digital ED8850A. Looking for a portable, handheld TV, this looked like a good choice with a DVD player included. To get tv reception, you MUST plug in an antenna. The little one that came with the unit has a very limited range, so I bought an antenna from Radio Shack for about $25.00. Unit works well when connected to an antenna, but the antenna that makes it work is larger than the unit. Not really very portable. Perhaps the "Built-in Tuner" advertising made me think "built-in antenna". Great as a portable DVD player. Disappointing as a portable TV.Buy Envizen Digital ED8850A Lowest Price, Order Now! This is the best portable DVD player.
I tried the Panasonic first but the cover lid was defective.

This one I haven't had any issues with.
The sound can go very high so no need for a head set unless the son wants to listen to Kids Bop. LOL
The picture is great and when you stop and turn it off in the middle of a DVD it will start right off from where you left it.
It will even show full screen so no wasting of the screen.

This is going to be great on our first real vacation ever.

Panasonic DVD-LS86 8.5-Inch Portable DVD Player Get It Now!

We bought the DVD player for air travel (>10h) for our 20 month old. So battery life was important and I have to say that with headphones and "moonlight" brightness setting on the display it really plays for a long time. A fully charged battery played about 4-5 full feature films and still had battery power left.

The unit is build pretty sturdy and the display is very good with unusual wide viewing angles. As added bonus we were able to hook up the player to an older European TV set in Germany and watch US DVDs. The pictures were slightly distorted but it was barely noticeable.

Overall a very good product.Buy Panasonic DVD LS86 Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]

My friend and I purchased a Denon DVD-3800BDCI on the same day. We both agreed it made SD-DVD look like Blu-Ray. Blu-ray movies from both video and audio were fantastic. Collectively my friend and I own & have owned some amazing equipment. It is my opinion after owning several of the "best", Sony, Pioneer, blu-ray players the DVD3800BDCI is a statement product for the industry. Ease of use & the quality of the product is stunning. All I had to do was look and listen. I started adding up the amount of DVD's and Blu-ray's I have in my library and the price issue became a non issue. I had a brief service problem with my Denon while under warranty and the repair time would be excessive so they sent me a new unit. I respect and admire the product as well as the manufacturer's integrity when service was needed. AudiomeisterBuy Denon DVD 3800BDCI Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]

Panasonic DMP-BD70V Blu-ray Disc/VHS Multimedia Player

As far as I know this is the only combo of this kind on the market, and I couldn't be happier. Despite the outdated format and my dwindling videotape collection, I wanted to replace my old Magnavox VCR instead of abandoning VHS altogether. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that I not only could still do that, I could additionally upgrade to Blu without having to find more shelf space or another power outlet. Since it isn't really all that versatile otherwise, this player is a snap to hook up. There are no inputs (except LAN) and the outputs consist of HDMI, component and composite video, with analog and digital audio (fiber optic only). It only comes with a set of RCA analog audio/video cables, so plan ahead. I am only using the HDMI video and optical audio and it plays discs flawlessly. Pop in a videotape and it automatically switches to VHS mode and reformats itself to 4:3, while still outputting only through the digital ports. Yes, this is only a player--I prefer DVD-RAM for recording these days, anyway--but if you want the ultimate in all-in-one playback, including USB devices and SD cards, this device is for you.Buy Panasonic DMP BD70V Lowest Price, Order Now! Panasonic DVD-LS86 8.5-Inch Portable DVD Player

I use one of these on an exercise machine to keep up with documentaries. For the past year I've been using a Sony DVP FX-820, but it would skip if A) I was playing content "late" in the disc (outer edge) or B) the exercise machine was vibrating more than usual. This really was a pain so I started looking for a player that had an anti-skip buffer like you find in most CD players. This was the only model that I could find that had it!Further, this player offers lots of zoom options, including some that maintain the original aspect ratio (i.e. don't distort the image). Most players offer just one nearly useless stretch mode, if they offer any zoom at all! This review applies to the LS-83 too -- the only difference between the 83 and 86 is the battery life, which I don't really care about.Buy Panasonic DVD LS86 Lowest Price, Order Now! Sony BDP-S560 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

I purchased this wireless WiFi unit so that I could stream my Photos and Movies that I have stored on my PC's to the TV via the Blu-Ray. I tried several times to set up the Blu-Ray to accomplish this but was unsuccessful. I contacted tech support and they informed me that, even though the literature on the BDP-S560 says it will do this, this model will not stream from a PC to the Blu-Ray. I was disappointed to say the least. I returned the Sony BDP-S560 to Amazon where I purchased it. Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to play a Blue-Ray disk on it. LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player

Forget Windows Media Center TV, Apple TV, DVico, Roku and all the other wanna-be's that purport to make your digital video viewing experience easy and seamless: the LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player is the biggest leap in consumer friendliness and video feature set than any technology product I have had experience with. If you have a modern PC or, better yet, a network attached storage server with multimedia capabilities, setting up the video and audio streaming capabilities on the LG BD 390 is pretty much a connect-the-cables-and-flip-the-switch affair. When you're done you will be able to enjoy up to 7.1 analog output, access to Vudu, Netflix, YouTube and other online content as well as excellent image quality and performance. Firmware updates promise to bring even more varied network features.I cannot speak to the wireless capabilities of the product. I think people who try to stream video content with today's wireless standards are hopelessly optimistic. But with wired Ethernet, this product cannot be beat. My only quibble is that even after I manually input my network information, the LG still wants to scan a few seconds for my NAS box instead of displaying the multimedia content on the server immediately. But overall, despite its plain looks, the LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player is deserving of all the kudos it has received in reviews. It is fast, reliable, easy to use and produces great video and audio output.Buy LG BD 390 Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]

Apparently this Bluray is not compatible with some older-model televisions. My tv is only about 5 years old and is an HD plasma from Vizio. Everything hooked up fine but the picture didn't work and after frustrating conversation with terrible customer service rep, it was clear that this player just doesn't work for some tvs. (I really only figured this out online later when I saw many other people complaining of same exact problems). LG clearly knows about this -- would have been nice if they had information about it in the specifications that I could have seen BEFORE I BOUGHT IT. I'm not ecstatic about it, but it works fairly well. Pluses: easy to figure out how to do things (even if some of the fancy ones are rather complex), does all that it's supposed to do, with many options for doing things like burning DVDs. I particularly like the flexible mode, where you can pick the exact recording time you want rather than being restricted to 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, etc., as you are with videotape recording. Minuses: very slow to start up (30-40 seconds), doesn't feed a signal through to the TV unless it's on. Hard to search through a recording to a particular spot because it doesn't give you the current elapsed time position unless you're just playing the recording, rather it displays an indication of how quickly you're fast-forwarding, as if you care more about that than about where you are on the disc. I'm no stranger to Samsung HD products - I own a Samsung 72" LED DLP tv, 1400 BD, 2500 BD and now the 3600 BD. I received my 3600 on 5/28/09 and while I found it extremely easy to setup and use Netflix, when I tried to use the player the next afternoon, it first went to the dreaded green screen and after a reboot, it would stop after powering up and was stuck on the LOAD display message... Samsung was going to take it back for repair (as even they couldn't get it to reset) - but that wasn't good enough (REPAIR??? I didn't want a player riddled with problems). To Best Buys credit, they took it back and I got another one.I got another one?? Yes, I have had, for the most part, great experiences with my Samsung HD products - and I have to say that at least for me, the wireless network ability on this player is fantastic! I also looked at the 4600, but why pay an extra $100 for the looks of the player? As long as this new 3600 player can make it beyond a 24 hour period, I would recommend it. Sony BDP-N460 Blu-ray Disc Player (Black)

I finally bit the bullet and went blu with this player, my first blu experience. It was extremely easy to set-up out of the box (reminder that you'll need to purchase an HDMI cable separately) and integrate into my system -- and there was no problem networking via a network cable and router into my existing ISP (you'll also need to purchase a network cable separately if you need one). I haven't yet gone wireless so cannot comment on those capabilities. The system upgrade process via the network connection was also easy to set-up and activate. I found the operating manual to be particularly lucid -- rare with most electronics. Immediately downloadable were Youtube content and dozens of other internet channels. It is true that Netflix is tantalizingly "Coming Fall 09" -- but there are hundreds and hundreds of movies already available via download from Amazon, including a huge assortment of HD titles. The overall picture quality has been superb from bluray discs -- and the upconverting on regular DVDs seems significantly better than my existing upconverting DVD player. Loading time is very, very quick -- there have been no stalls or quirks in audio or visuals in loading any of the dozen or so discs that I currently own. As a first time blu ray user, this player has performed flawlessly thus far and it seems to deliver exactly what it promises!Buy Sony BDP N460 Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]

Sony BDP-S560 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player Top Quality

Tried two different regular DVD's and the audio cuts in and out periodically on this player. I did try one Blu-Ray disc and it didn't have that problem. Everything else is great about this player. Waiting for my replacement from Amazon at this point as I found nothing on the Sony site about this issue. Verified that it was not the TV or the HDMI cable as they both worked fine on my previous sony blu-ray. Update - got the replacement unit and it had the same problem. Called Sony support and they say no issues are reported for this unit. I find that hard to believe, since I got 2 different units and they both had the same problem. My setup for this unit is exactly like my BDP-S350, and that unit has no issues with playback. Sending it back!Buy Sony BDP S560 Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]

LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player

I'm definately not a computer guru, but I was a little disappointed in the quality of the Netflix streaming video. I connected the BD390 via Cat 5 to a 1GB network connected to a Cox Cable modem (13 Mbps) and the speed rating displayed by Netflix was about mid range. The picture quality (which is automatically controlled by the detected speed rating) was poor, and I found out the sound is always stereo, no matter how fast the connection. Later on that night, I watched Cannonball 2, and apparently the speed rating improved because the picture was much better (acceptable SD in fact). I can upgrade the cable speed to 25 Mbps for an additional $15 a month, but until Netflix offers more HD video and something more than stereo audio, I'm not sure it will be worth it.I also tried to connect to my HP 495 MediaSmart Server, but was only able to view the photos (it wouldn't play the songs or videos). I haven't had time to troubleshoot that problem yet.If I can get it to play well with the HP 495 I'll be happy overall. If Netflix starts offering higher quality streaming, I'll be VERY happy!Buy LG BD 390 Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]

Samsung BD-P1600 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

I will never purchase another Samsung product ever! Well after having the BD 1590 for about a month I forgot to turn if off & it was on for about 24 hrs playing a BluRay over & over it started not to work at all & this journey started!I started out with the Samsung Bd-1590 and ended up with the Bd-1600 Both were a joke! Well with the 1590 series I tried 3 BD players and they all acted the same! While watching a Blu-Ray & with the pop up menu going the players would act as if the Blu-Ray was skipping as it did with many other titles! Also one of the three would not even play a DVD so back to the store & off with a BD-1600 No problems with playing blu-rays but with menu pulled while watching a Blu-Ray it did the same as the others and would take longer to load movie then the past duds!So back to the store! Purchased a Panasonic DMP BD 1600 and I have owned this model for about 4 months now & all I can say is wow! Now I did like the Samsung sounds when you pushed the buttons & Samsung players were more sleek looking but those features are worth there trade in GOLD! The Panasonic DMP BD 1600 works like a dream & loads discs fast even Casino loaded in about 5 mins compared to 15 mins with both Samsungs! Also the picture with no adjustment to TV looked 10 fold better & way more colorful then with Samsungs! Even friends & family asked if I had purchased a new plasma! Oh yeah my plasma is a Panny & like my father always said dont judge a book by its cover & I learned the hard way with Samsung Bluray players!Buy Samsung BD P1600 Lowest Price, Order Now! Sony BDP-S360 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

I love the sound and picture quality. I also agree it is annoying that there is no eject button on the remote control. Also, this unit does not "remember" the last point at which you stopped the movie. It starts from scratch, even if you take a one hour break from the movie (without ejecting it even!). I expect more from Sony.Buy Sony BDP S360 Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]

Panasonic DMP-BD80 High Clarity Audio Blu-ray Disc Player, Black

I only had one BD player in my home, the Panny DMP-BD55k feeding a Mitsubishi HC 1600 projector. This unit has proved hassle free in my experience delivering top notch performance. When i found the BD80 at nearly half the cost of what i paid for the BD55, i could not resist. I had originally been waiting to buy another BD player for my 61" 1080p Samsung HL-T6176S, in the form of a PS3 Slim for the added gaming. But the very same reason i bought a 55k for a BD player over a PS3 last year, held true again this time around-the 7.1 analog outputs to get DolbY TRUE HD/DTS:HD/MA from my existing non-HDMI receivers(no need to upgrade my receiver until they bite the dust!), this time being much cheaper than the console as well, looking better on the component rack, not having to buy a remote, nor an infra red adapter being it wont operate off my Logitech remote. The BD55k and BD80 are essentially the same player, except the BD80 adds the Viera Cast online features. The audio performance from this player is excellent via the analog connections. It has been used with both a 5.1 Denon AVR-1602 and a 7.1 Onkyo AVR576 through the analogs feeding a quartet of PSB Image B25's, Image C60 Center and a SVS PB12 . Very good overall sound quality in conjunction with these, and both setups yielded strong low frequency extension and articulate upper bass response. Picture quality is equally as impressive, BD picture had good color pop and smooth 24P playback. DVD upscaling is up to par with my Denon DVD upconverting player, which is very good. I've setup comparably priced Samsung and Pioneer players for my parents, and i easily prefer the Panny's performance and operation over those. The disc load to play times are not market leading, but I've found them avg/acceptable.All in all, the player is highly recommended particulaly at the prices going now. THe BD35/ BD 60 are great units as well if you do not need the 7.1 analog outputs.Buy Panasonic DMP BD80 Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]

Toshiba DVR620 DVD/VHS Recorder, Black

This was perfect for me dubbing my old VHS-C tapes. The picture quality was excellent and for the price it was awesome. I did notice the VCR played my tapes with some tracking issues but it was because I havent watched these tapes in a long time and they were probably sticking or something. The only thing is that it is tricky to learn to DUB. You have to read several sections first in the manual to get started an learn the features/icons. For the most part it was pretty intuitive. It doesnt feel flimsy and feels well built which is nice. Glad I bought it. Buy Toshiba DVR620 Lowest Price, Order Now! [Click Here!]

Toshiba DR570 DVD Recorder With Built In Tuner, Black

Until now I have used a VCR/VHS since they were first made to record daily afternoon and evening programs. In case you have not noticed, these machines are now almost impossible to find new and reasonably priced. They are also badly made and have numerous taping problems. So, kicking and screaming I explored alternative worlds of recording.I ruled out TIVO--I can easily program any machine and do not need to pay a monthly subscription fee so that the machine automatically programs it, in addition of course, to purchasing such a machine. Though some will find it an easy alternative, to me this was a waste of money. Ultimately I decided on a DVD recorder and player with a tuner: the tuner makes programming directly from the TV easier. I chose this machine because it had all the features I needed and it arrived today. The quality of the recordings are excellent but the remote, oh my goodness, who in the world designed such a dreadful remote? Another review warned that this was a problem, but somehow I could not imagine to what extent. It is not difficult to read, it is virtually impossible. The letters demarking each function are so pale that they fade entirely away against the black background of the remote. I used a magnifying glass under a very intense light to try and make out key buttons. Unless I memorize their location, this is going to be a disaster. What kind of design engineer would do such a stupid thing and not think about how the remote device will be used?It is astonishing that Toshiba which produces so many fine electronic products would approve this remote. I am afraid it will destroy my enjoyment of what appears to be a perfectly fine DVD recorder/player because I will always be struggling to figure out what key does what.Buy Toshiba DR570 Lowest Price, Order Now!
